Frequently visit a kart track. Absolutely HATE racing with large groups like this. Yes I know, you guys are excited. You think you're fast. But you still have to slow down for the turn. So many times I've almost been t-boned at the turn because someone thinks staying close inside at full speed is faster.

had a work outing race.
Got fucking tboned by my god damn manager like this in the finals race. He thought it made him good, his bitch ass still took shitty lines the rest of the race and I passed him on the last lap.
THATS WHY YOU GOT FIRED BRIAN, YA BITCH.

I also had a work outing race, and I got T-boned by one of the guys on another team who decided that going full-throttle into the hairpin on the inside of the track would work somehow. He hit my kart so hard I saw stars, it disabled his kart... my kart was okay to drive once I got my bearings. I ended up finishing #2 overall for our group, the guy who beat me was an experienced amateur racer and I outweighed him by 50+lbs... I couldn't touch his times.

There was a handful of us that were having fun trying to set the fastest lap time, and the rest were just doing laps and having fun being in a kart. The guy who hit me wasn't one of the people trying to set a fast lap... he was just an idiot.

I was at a training class in Orlando a few years ago. The company hosting it took us all to an outdoor kart track. It had rained that afternoon and the track was still wet. I was surprised the track let us go out. Most of the people drove a couple of laps and quit. They were getting wet and the karts were hard to drive on a wet track. A few other guys and I had the track to ourselves and I had a blast doing lap after lap.

My work did this once. I won. Trophy is still on display at my desk ~15 years later.
Seemed like driver weight and just being willing to abuse your body were the big deciders. Your neck and arms take a beating.
34 points
The trick is not to lean your body into the corners.
58 points
You still need to keep your head from flopping over while wearing a helmet that makes it heavier than normal. Makes me really appreciate the neck training that F1 drivers do because of the forces they see in corners.

Outside of karting weight not so much, but how much abuse you're willing to take is what decides whether you can race in the big leagues

Had something like this happen to me once. I don’t do karts a lot, but I have a reasonably OK understanding of lines and got respectable times. Or, at least, I would have if one of our managers actually let people pass and wasn’t all over the place. It was infuriating.
I definitely shouldn’t have, but I have him a slight bump at just the right point in the turn to cause him to have to get out of the way. It wasn’t even truly intentional, he just hit the brakes at an apparently random time, which caused me to hit the corner of his kart. I just didn’t entirely not expect him to do that.
7 points

You shouldn’t feel too bad. Narrow tracks, you often need to go for the gaps when they appear, even if they’re a little bit too small. You’ll never be able to pass otherwise.

I once went to a karting track with family. There were a couple of older men who were obviously way more experienced. They brought their own helmets even I think. I was just doing some laps. Granted, I was pretty slow, bc I couldn't press the pedal all the way in for some reason, but those guys were actively using me to block the other. One guy grabbed my kart by the side when I stood still and pushed me towards the middle of the track, causing me to collide with the other. I quit after that lap

once I went to a place that had a kart track and I was driving and this mom and her elementary age son were in another one and she was purposely running into me non stop and laughing and wouldn't leave me alone. it was super annoying and I don't think I've been on one since. I told my dad about it and he said he is surprised no one who worked there tried to stop her.
24 points

One of those tandem karts? Probably fairly slow, no helmets? Those places the employees dont give a single fuck. Find a proper place that has the 40+ mph karts. More strict on bumping and don't get placed with kids. Lots more fun.

Yup. I worked at a track for a short stint after I left nursing college. Twice it was so bad we had to call the paramedics. It's scary the amount of times people had the safety briefing go in the one ear and out the other. On a daily basis races were stopped so that reckless idiots could be removed from the track for not following safety rules.

Which is why I prefer track days. Even if it's so rare I go actual tracking, and don't have a proper track car, I still prefer sharing the tarmac with people who paid for their own car and driven hours from their own. The closest car I had was when I had the outside line and a faster car took the inside line but had a bad weight transfer and spun. No contact at all.

Last time I went go karting I was doing doing so good compared to the rest of the group, which consisted of a bunch of noobs like myself. In the next round, 3 new people joined in. They brought their own helmets. I learned in the following round how fast these go karts can go.
It reminded me of the first time I played Gran Turismo online where I got crushed by people who are really good in the game.

They believe they're in bumper cars. The difference between those and go karts isn't obvious to everyone. To be fair, some look similar to bumper cars.
On the other hand, if you don't know what you're about to drive, you probably shouldn't drive it in the first place.
Edit: I wouldn't ram a wall in a bumper car going 30 either.

aw fuck, you’ve got any stories in mind?
i got a few. there was that one shift i had off where some dude shot up heroin under the underpass. all staff was held til midnight filing police reports.
another time i was to teaching a kid how to use the gas and brake. i was sitting on the side of the kart guiding her. she floored it and the momentum made me panic. my dumbass gripped the bumper and was dragged a few meters. the only thing that was hurt was my ego after my manager (the physical, emotional and mental embodiment of mr.krabs) cussed me out in front of a crowd.
there was another time four douchebags came in and basically were bumping people off the track. all my supervisors tried jumping in to stop em but couldn’t do anything cus these mofos were willing to run over anyone. one of my supervisors actually jumped over one of the incoming karts which was mega gnarly
22 points
Damn I've never had anyone doing heroin on site but we've had a few people come in drunk and stoned. The teaching kids to use pedals was always a risk and after one occasion where I had to hop over a barrier to avoid someone I never stood directly in front of them
Once two customers got in a fist fight on track in the middle of a session, and then they threatened to wait outside for the managers shift to end so they could 'settle things'. This was at 2pm. His shift finished at 11pm.
I have so many memories of that place, was equal parts stressful, frustrating and fun

Yea but it looks like that bar is only behind the driver. If the cart had fallen in a way that was in front of that bar, it would definitely have been a squish. Not really sure what else to do except a full roll cage to prevent it.
I am more surprised the design of the cars allows them to ride up over each other so easily. Their bumpers are really poorly designed for the track type.
106 points
This happens sometimes at K1 speed. It is a weight issue. Light riders around 110 pounds have this issue where when they T-bone another kart they get sent vertical.
It is a real issue and is more common than you would expect.

He didn't tense up, he slid out of his seat. You're not belted in on karts, that's just his legs on either side on the kart doing the splits cause he's lying down in it when he lands.
15 points
Could be neck trauma? Don't see much head support. That's the best guess I got.
It is kind of unsettling how his legs don't un-tense after he stops moving
7 points
My question is how the heck did that first kid not get knocked out that kart literally hit him in the face at full speed, well turning speed I'd imagine, and you could see his neck flick to the side. I can't say much for that second impact because it looked to me as though he went to block it with his arm but that first hit looked serious. And the one that got pushed into the sky might have hit his head or suffered some form of whiplash or other brain trauma

On a serious note, these things go fast. I used the local ones by me and they reach 40mph and on 2 parts of the track you can absolutely hit top speed.
People who aren't regulars look at them as toys / bumper cars and don't appreciate hitting someone at those speeds is not only dangerous but fucking hurts. While I didn't have a wreck nearly this bad, I did have a minor collision that was an instant awakening of, whoa I need to actually take this as seriously as if I was driving a regular car and avoid collisions at all costs.
Noobs cut people off and cut corners trying to pass completely oblivious to how dangerous their racing actually is.

There are indoor go kart tracks with bars in China. In Shanghai they had one with older and newer carts for more money. No safety briefing and communal helmets akin to batting cage helmets. The worst was 4 drunk Americans (myself and coworkers) and 6 Chinese locals with two who were very timid about speed and the rest were absolute demons. There was only two places on the track to pass. Complete shit show ensues, a carts wheel fell off from the "rubbing is racing" chant we had going, airborne carts, enhaling huge amounts of exhaust, getting yelled at in shanghainese (was not mandarin), and everyone was hammered... I would not want to see when things go really wrong. Hysterical fun though and they had lap timers.

Holy shit i actually saw something like this at my local Go-Karting place. Someone who was just starting tried to do a turn but just spun around and literally EVERYONE crashed into him. It must have been the scariest thing ever. I know because I was him.
