Social media has become a regular part of our daily routines. It has become engraved in our minds as a natural occurrence we don't give much thought to. What I was trying to find out is first of all why do we feel the need to endlessly scroll through social media spending hours on it every day but also most importantly how would we feel without it. In what ways would our lives change if there was no social media. Or at least if we were able to drastically decrease the time spent on those apps.
So, I decided to stay off social media and dial down my usage to a minimum. I can't completely ignore it since I use a few apps for promoting my YouTube channel. So I limited myself to using social media ONLY for the purposes of promoting my channel. Zero scrolling basically.
I feel less anxious, sleep better and have much more free time (didn't think I would notice this one). My overall mood also improved and I noticed I care less what other people think and I'm more in touch with the real world.
I don't believe we should all quit and never go on another social app again for as long as we live though. But I do believe that reducing our time on social media and focusing on different aspects of our lives a little bit more can be a good thing. Not putting so much value on those metrics and numbers and starting to compare ourselves only to ourselves from the day before while being happy with minimum to no acknowledgment from others.
I read that, due to the effect that it has on the brain, social media is addictive both physically and psychologically. Using social media lights up the same part of the brain as most other addictive substances. When someone experiences something rewarding (like using social media), or uses an addictive substance, that activates dopamine producing areas of our brain, causing dopamine levels to rise.
It can make us feel less alone, but also trigger feelings of isolation and inadequacy. If we’re spending a lot of time on social media, it can be hard to imagine life without it. However, there are plenty of reasons to consider taking a break from endless scrolling.
If you would like to try it for yourself, here's a video on the topic. I talk about some benefits but also some cons of quitting, what happens to our brain and bodies when we use social media and a few tips and hacks I used to make the quitting process much easier (like the one in the title).
Let me know what are your thoughts on the topic. How do you feel about social media in general?
