Linguistics time:

She pronounces paper chaser somethinɡ like [pʰeɪ.pʰʌ t͡ʃʰeɪ.sʌ] (the vowels might be slightly off, but it's close enough). What we want to hear is big fucking slut, which is [bɪɡ fʌ.kʰɪŋ slʌt].

So what we're hearing is:

[pʰeɪ] > [bɪɡ] which is understandable - the final [g] not being there isn't super detrimental as final consonants are inherently harder to perceive. The vowels are quite close - while Rihanna is singing with a slight diphthong [eɪ], since she's dragging out the second [ɪ] portion it's not crazy that it sounds like just [ɪ]. The fact that the [pʰ] is mistaken for a [b] is not crazy either - if you're a non-linguist, notice that both sounds are pronounced with your lips, and the actual differences are harder to hear while singing and with all those effects on.

[pʰʌ] > [fʌ] - same vowel (or at least very close), and f is another sound you pronounce with your lips (and teeth) - so not crazy that they sound similar enough.

[t͡ʃʰeɪ] > [kʰɪŋ] - the vowels are the same as above, and the lack of the final [ŋ] is also not a big deal as mentioned above. But [t͡ʃʰ] as [kʰ]? Might seem crazy but actually it's not. While [k] is usually pronounced with the back of your tongue hitting the velum (soft palate in the back of the roof of your mouth) when saying words like car or cot, if you say key you'll notice it's pronounced further to the front. This is because of the vowel needing to have your tongue towards the front of your mouth, and this effect makes [k] sound much more like [t͡ʃʰ] (the ch sound in chain). This [k] + [i] sounding like [t͡ʃʰ] is super common, and leads to some languages actually pronouncing it that way. Latin words with ci are inherited in italian with such a pronunciation, and on the other end of the world you can find Mandarin Chinese with a similar change (older spelling of Beijing was Peking, for example).

Finally we have [sʌ] > [slʌt]. Not a big deal either, just pretend she slipped an [l] in and ignore the hard to hear final consonants and we're fine.

So anyway tl;dr: linguistically this isn't a super crazy misperception.

SlotherakOmega

Explain algebra then.

Also, I’ve always seen math as a language that transcends all other languages because of the way it works. It’s logical. It’s practical. And it’s used every day, for a multitude of reasons. But the differences lie in how the numbers are pronounced and (sometimes, depending on the culture and history of said language) how they are written. I just read up on a system that monks designed in Sicily (iirc) to represent a base 10,000 system. Easily. That blows my mind. Can you imagine how insane that is, that monks designed a base-10k system FOR NO PRACTICAL REASON? What are they counting that would require a base that large? The reason why we don’t normally teach binary counting systems outside of programming is because it’s incredibly spacious. You’d need four digits to write the number “ten” as 1010. Meanwhile, in base-ten, that’s just two digits: 10. In hex, that’s one digit: A. We just substitute a letter for a numeral because the Arabic numbering system that is so widely accepted only has ten numerals, so we use A-F for the remaining six values.

Meanwhile, some monastery in Europe somewhere decided that it was either not good enough to use base-ten numbers, or never knew of the Arabic numbering system, or was bored out of their skulls with the constant celibacy and dedication to their faith (I believe this one more). And made a system that could turn the almighty Googol (10 ^ 100, a 101 digit number) into a 25 digit number, 26 if we add a 1. I’m curious how much space the Googolplex would need to be expressed in this system... it seems to cut it in to fourths, so it actually could be written in the available universe, with room to spare.... scary how insignificant it now has become.

To add to this, there's something a little weird in the last vowel in "chaser" that makes it sound more like there's an L there. Almost like "syuh".

Also, syllable-ending T's in English are often pronounced as a glottal stop which is almost silent. If you're American you probably say and hear this all the time without ever realizing it's not really a T sound. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-glottalization

Add in autotune distortion and some natural vowel transformations that are necessary to maintain flow in singing, and that last syllable is very very close to how "slut" might be pronounced.

the_enginerd

9 points

I can also confirm it’s much harder to tell the difference listening to a high quality audio reproduction especially at high intensity than using the phone to reproduce this heavily auto tuned set of lyrics.

My opinion here: Her voice is really tormented by auto tune in this section and the nuance of all the distortion added is completely lost with reproduction on phone or even most Bluetooth speakers.

You ever look at a clock and think, "Did that second-hand hang there longer than usual or was it just me?" That's because when you make rapid eye movements instead of processing the visual information your brain just deletes that info and back fills it with the first thing you see. It's called saccadic masking and even though it only lasts fractions of a second, it means that cumulatively about 40 minutes of every day is completely made up by your brain.

The cool thing is I never heard this song before, so I only heard his version. But I watched it again repeating the words “I’m a baby chaser” and did it read the screen prompts and I heard it that way. It’s kinda cool how your head builds a pattern and sticks with it. Someone put out a video a little bit ago where it’s just a phrase repeating and if you said one phrase you heard that. If you said the other phrase you heard that one. It’s all perspective and what you trained your brain to see... like the purple/yellow or white/black dress. ~~Slime ~~ Some people only saw one because it was the first color they saw and left it at that, but if you covered one side and trained your brain to see that color and removed the covering you would see what ever color you trained your brain to see.

L-JvG

47 points

L-JvG

47 points

So if you listen out for it. You Han hear a ‘t’ after she says “chase”. If you only listen for “I’m a paper chasa” you will filter out and trim the sound to fit that, in this example it’s the ‘t’ ‘ch’ sound that is almost my completely cut.

Why? You’re brain is seeking meaning. Words are shockingly un word like when you listen to them slowly, we’re all just real good at hearing meaning in them.

The difference between ‘p’ and ‘b’ is extremely small. In isolated and controlled settings it’s clear what you’re trying to say. In live settings though it’s muddies up and there is room for interpretation based on what makes sense.

I could point out the other similar sounds and just how similar they are but I don’t want to get the IPA of my keyboard.

Just trust me that

“Ch” and “S” (hard S)

“K” and “s” (soft s)

“Er” from paper and “u” from fuck

“u” from slut and “a” from chasa

Are all almost identical sounds

KidsTryThisAtHome

75 points

Pay pah chay suh

Big fuck in slut

I think it's all the effects on her voice, mixed with how she pronounces paper and chaser (I was gonna make a joke about how she sounded jamaican, but I guess she's actually from Barbados). But it's easy to hear "pay" as "big" and then I think your brain forces itself to make sense of the rest. It shouldn't fit but it does lol

Icyrow

19 points

Icyrow

19 points

i think that one kinda borrows the start/constanant from the next word in your example

Pay pah chay suh

Big fuck in slut

you can kinda use that as an anchor though and see where similar sounds sorta pop out.

i find it interesting, we take it for granted that a lot of words sound different in our brains but if you have someone from another continent who's never learned the language try, they tend to get stuck on it. children also get stuck on these.

one is P and B, they sound basically identical, but with some practice you can learn them apart, but we've had years and years of trying to get them differently and seeing them in places that we expect them to pop out. i think these sorts of sound bites (green needle/brain storm aswell) sorta play on this and force us to see the mountain we've climbed into deluding ourselves that they are massively different.

now have an extra sympathy for anyone learning english (or any other language for the first time at that).

What’s really going to blow your mind is that when it comes to that part… start reading the first “paper chaser” one but then jump to the ‘fucking slut’ one before the line is done being sung. Your brain will instantly swap between the two, even though the lyric doesn’t make sense.

The-Dragonborn

35 points

Kinda, but not exactly. Joking implies you're trying to get a reaction and make someone laugh, and in this sense, I think he was using "memeing" more or less as someone trying to get something to catch on.

I could be wrong of course, but while joking works in that sentence, memeing could also work as a different meaning.

It's the lower basier notes. It's kinda rhythmic, too. It lines up like a drum flam.

Sorta like this:

Brainstorm

Greeneedle

It slows down a little on "Storm". The "N" sound you hear in Green is the end of Brain, and the "EE" sound you hear is the tail end of the "S" sound in Storm. It draws out the "orm", the tail end of which you hear as an "L" sound. I think it's all about hearing the initial base sound as a B instead of hearing a G slightly after.

When I consider the great lengths advertisers went to to put subliminal messages into their visual ads in the 80s and 90s, I shudder to think of how this phenomenon could be (or has been) developed to influence thoughts and perceptions

Visual subliminal messaging never worked. It’s an old urban myth that grew out ouf a fraudulent claim about an alleged effect in the 1950’s:

From the Wikipedia article about James Vicary, who made the claim about his infamous and fake “popcorn experiment”:

Popcorn experiment

One of the most commonly known examples of subliminal messaging is Vicary’s movie theater "experiment" in 1957, purportedly in Fort Lee, NJ. In his press release, he claimed that 45,699 people were exposed to subliminal projections telling them to "Eat Popcorn" and "Drink Coca-Cola", causing a 57.5 percent sales increase for popcorn and an 18.1 percent increase in Coca-Cola sales. Vicary provided no explanations for his results making it impossible to reproduce his results. Taken in context with evidence that no experiment even took place, Vicary’s results can be considered completely fraudulent. Vicary later retracted his claims in a television interview, but Vicary’s original claims spread rapidly and lead to widespread acceptance of subliminal messaging, even today. (O’Barr 2005).

and

He is most famous for having perpetrated a fraudulent subliminal advertising study in 1957. In it, he claimed that an experiment in which moviegoers were repeatedly shown 1/3000-second advertisements for Coca-Cola and popcorn significantly increased product sales.[3] Based on his claims the CIA produced a report "The operational potential of subliminal perception" [4] in 1958 that led to subliminal cuts being banned in the US[dubious – discuss]. It suggested that "Certain individuals can at certain times and under certain circumstances be influenced to act abnormally without awareness of the influence". When challenged later to replicate the study, he failed to find significant results. Vicary provided no explanations for his results or any other details about his study to the public, claiming that it is part of a confidential patent. When Stuart Rogers[5] interviewed the theater that supposedly conducted this experiment, the manager declared that there was no such test ever done (Rogers 1992)[6]

I can't hear it at all. Anyone not able to hear it but able to trick their brains into hearing it have some advice on how to do it? I've listened to it at least a dozen times and can only hear "paper chaser".

I can't hear it at all. I've tried and even if I hear "big" it immediately switches back to paper chaser after that.

Can't hear the slut thing at all. Even when I just tell my brain to hear it. I still just hear paper chaser

EDIT: Holy fuck! After reading /u/dumass112 comment about reading it then it fucking clicked and worked. It only works if I'm reading it at that time. If not it's back to normal.

You can even switch halfway through.

Though now that I've listened to it a thousand times, I seem to have broken it and just hear both at the same time.

Same!!! Someone help with this phoenetically, please. I can't hear it either

I'm a /pa/per cha/sa
I'm a /bi'/ fuchin'/ sluh'

This is the best I can do, but I don't hear it. I'm just guessing what other people are hearing.

In my californian accents and regional dialects which I've heard many through casual experience, none of those fit any of the speaking tones and variations of fuckin or slut that I know. Maybe in music where they bend words to fit the rhyming and rhythm schemes, but my head still can't map these.

I have a theory that maybe we are using a new modern dialect that is cutting off the harsher sounds like hard g, and softer ck, and then killing out the t. Then put on a covid cloth mask and muffle all the sounds, then put it through a zoom happy hour filter with random drops in words, so words sound more like suggested sounds of the words rather than full words.

I've heard these before and I usually can hear both but I only hear paper chaser. I'm not even sure how you could hear the other.

And now I can switch between what I hear in the middle of it, paper kingslut / big fu chaser
