Someone on Twitter is reporting Tiger is in the OR with two broken legs

Multiple leg injuries and already in surgery, sounds real bad. Already figured he was going to miss the Masters, but at this point, I hope he just makes it back to the tour.

I know I'm just a Random Internet Dude with no way to prove this (at least no way I'm going to), but I grew up in that area and went to high school not more than a mile or so from where that accident is.

Hawthorne Blvd. is a very twisty, curvy road up and down hills. If he was traveling northbound, then right about where he crashed the road takes a long swing to the right -- it would be incredibly easy to lose control of your car there. Accidents happen on Hawthorne and Crenshaw (a similar parallel road on the other side of the ridge) all the time.

Don't know what the weather was like, but there is often heavy fog in the morning/evening, and if there was any moisture those roads turn into skating rinks because we would get so little rain that when it did rain, all the oil/grease/dirt on the road would start to run off.

Point being: I get that it is natural to assume he was zonked out given the totality of the circumstances and his history, but I also find it completely plausible that it was just a simple accident where he was distracted for a second and ran off the road. I'd encourage folks to wait until more details are made available.

Roll over crash, Tiger was the driver and only one in the car. Really hoping it's not as bad as this makes it sounds.

I’d be surprised if this isn’t the end of his pro career. Imagine having back surgery just before a serious car accident, requiring emergency surgery on both legs. That’s a horrible combo for recovery.

Heard an update on ABC news the LAPD is not actively investigating the crash as a result of DUI, and they are retracting their statement about using the ‘Jaws of life’ which is apparently not true now. They did however remove the windshield. And via LA County sheriff the injuries are not life threatening.

CNN has Danny Rappoport of Golf Digest in an interview just now and he says Tiger was due at the club for an early filming shoot. Sounds like he was at least doing what he was supposed to be doing

11:52 AM PT -- Mark Steinberg, Tiger's agent, says he sustained multiple leg injuries and is currently in surgery. 11:43 AM PT -- An L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. source tells TMZ Sports they do not believe alcohol was involved but they did not say whether any other substance was possibly involved.

I live very nearby. People drive way too fast on that road and it has some pretty sharp turns. It’s quite dangerous. My grandma rolled her car there when I was a little kid.

I may be called pessimistic but this to me spells the end of his sports career. Your spine compresses an awful lot during a violent roll over crash that like. Coupled with his leg injuries I can’t imagine him ever swinging professionally again. Depending on the severity of his breaks the PT itself could take a further toll on his back. It truly would be a damn shame if this is how one of the goats goes out.

As someone who has been a fan of Tiger's since I was a child, and who has also suffered a catastrophic leg trauma, this is absolutely heartbreaking on so many levels. I'm having a really hard time with this, not going to lie.

I drove that road every school day for years. It’s a fairly steep down hill section where he went off the road

LA County Sheriff statement

There was no evidence of impairment noted by deputies responding to the rollover crash involving Tiger Woods, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference Tuesday.

Woods was in stable condition with serious injuries when he was taken to the hospital, L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said in the news conference with the sheriff.

Really sounds like Tiger was just givin'er on a bad stretch of road and wasn't impaired. Hope that's the case. Really hoping no long term impact to his health and they can get him back to semi normal.

Wow, that's pretty scary. According to the official police statement, Tiger's vehicle sustained "major damage." And obviously, needing to be extricated from the car and being taken by ambulance to the hospital is concerning. Hopefully, he's okay.

Is there a remotely medical definition for a "shattered ankle?" I mean it sounds less than ideal, but is there some kind of threshold to go from broken to shattered? Multiple breaks?

Have seen a couple random people on Twitter both separate claim segmental tibia and open talus. Hard to say, but given that it seems like his legs might have really gotten crushed in there, and he may be lucky to have kept the foot at all.

Lots of comments/questions that amount to: he must have been zonked because there are no skid marks. I was curious -- and don't feel like doing my real job -- so I did some math.

As near as I can tell, the reason there are no skid marks is because the car would have only been in contact with the road for a fraction of a second, if that. There simply wasn't time for him to hit the brakes and/or for skid marks to form.

For anyone curious and also looking to avoid working:

Assumptions:

• Tiger was traveling at 60mph (100km) -- this would have been a normal, even "slow" speed for that stretch of road. (I know because I grew up there)

• The median he hit was 8 inches high, which Google tells me is standard

• Because the road is going pretty steeply downhill, I'm adding another 4 inches to the vertical height of the car when it exited the median. As near as I can tell, the elevation change in the mile preceding the accident is about 400 feet (topo map is hard to read), giving the road a grade of 7%-8%. So the ground will be falling away from him, and maybe the car popped up an inch or two.

At 1 foot (.3m) off the ground, it would have taken the car .25 seconds to land:

d = .5at^2, where d = height, a = acceleration (10m/s^2), and t = time (what we are trying to find)

.3 = .5(10)t²

t = .25

I drew a triangle based on his crash path to calculate the hypotenuse. Each lane is 10 feet wide, plus a foot on either side, for a height of 22 ft. I calculated the length by counting the line dashes -- each dash is 10 feet, and as near as I can tell there are 8 of them, but we will say 9 just to be safe.

a² + b² = c²

22² + 90² = c²

c = 93 feet = ~28m.

28m is the distance he traveled (on an angle) across the southbound lanes.

So now the question is: how far did the car fly off the median, and was there any road left before he ran off the road?

d = vt = 100 * .25 = 25m = 83 feet

Accounting for various fudge factors, it seems likely that he had only somewhere between 0-20 feet of road to work with. It's possible he would have cleared the road entirely (or close enough) coming off the median. That's essentially no time where the tires are in contact with the ground before running off the road.

And now I suppose I have to get to work :(
