ADVERSE stars the ensemble cast of Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Penelope Ann Miller (The Artist), Sean Astin (The Lord of The Rings), Lou Diamond Phillips (Young Guns) and Thomas Nicholas (American Pie). The film is written and directed by Brian A. Metcalf (Living Among Us).

SYNOPSIS: Thomas Nicholas (“Red Band Society”) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) star in this gritty, intense urban thriller about one man’s quest for revenge. Struggling to make ends meet, rideshare driver Ethan (Nicholas) learns his sister Mia is deep in debt to a sleazy drug dealer. When Mia goes missing, Ethan discovers that crime boss Kaden (Rourke) is behind the act, and to get close to him Ethan takes a job as Kaden’s driver. One by one Ethan hunts down members of Kaden’s crew to wreak bloody vengeance as he prepares to confront Kaden himself. The stellar cast also includes Lou Diamond Phillips, Sean Astin, and Penelope Ann Miller.

As per the title, the original Alien movie is - to me at least - the best horror movie I ever have and ever will see. The characters just feel so real, it was suspenseful yet a slow burn, the retrofuturistic space environment was awesome, it wasn't overly gory, the plot twist blew me away, and the atmosphere was just on point.

What else do you think I would like? I've already seen the Thing, and it was good, but not in the same way that alien was.

In Sing from 2016 his character signs I'm Still Standing.

In the sequel to Kingsman he ends up saving Elton John and fighting alongside him against the villains.

And then in 2019 he plays him in Rocket Man, singing I'm Still Standing again in it as well.

Just kind of a funny thing I just noticed

I've recently started a petition to re-release 'Dogma' on Blu-Ray. Now that it is out of print, the few people who do own a copy are free to charge however much they like for a film that is now one of the rarest Blu-Ray releases. This poses a problem for both film preservation and the commercialisation of film as a medium!

In honor of International Women's Day...

I've seen several posts today celebrating badass female heroes and protagonists, so I thought I'd shake things up a bit.

Here are a few female baddies that I've always found both intimidating and complex:

-Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent (Ever After)

Favorite Cinderella film, favorite evil stepmother

-The Beldam (Coraline)

Talk about the stuff of nightmares.

-Ursula (Little Mermaid)

Definitely has her intimidating moments, but also fun to watch.

-Nurse Ratchet (One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest)

A demon disguised as an angel, the lowest a villain can get.

-Annie Wilkes (Misery)

Once again, a twisted mind under the guise of love who can snap at any moment. Kathy Bates is a MASTER of her craft.

What lady devils do you love?

I recently watched Danny Boyle's 'Yesterday' and while I enjoyed the concept for the film, I felt the overall execution/plot was quite weak. It always disappoints me when I see a film with a really unique and interesting concept that just doesn't land, because it's unlikely you'll get to see the same thing explored again but better - at least any time soon. What are some movies you'd like to see redone with better exploration of a good concept?

When discussing great directors on this forum (and in general), you see a lot of the same names...Nolan, Scorsese, the Davids (Fincher and Lynch), the Andersons (Paul Thomas and Wes), Kubrick, etc. But who are some guys or gals with filmographies you enjoy that maybe don't have all the awards, acclaim or fame of the top dogs?

Gareth Evans (The Raid 1 & 2) and Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, The Invisible Man) are among my favorites. They both inject their projects with a lot of energy and have managed to do so with relatively meager budgets. I think that kind of ingenuity is dope and proves if you have the vision and a good crew behind you, you don't need big stars and tons of money to make movies that look slick and have a good amount of scale.

I also think Doug Liman has made some really fun movies (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jumper, Edge of Tomorrow). I haven't seen it, but Chaos Walking seems like it could be another high-concept sci-fi flick with decent entertainment value. Even when his movies aren't that great, they're usually at least enjoyable on some level.

One of those movies that often gets mentioned as one of the greats, but probably not actually watched by too many people.

When I watched this film as a younger man (20s), I identified - more like aspired to identify - with the Andre Gregory character: traveling all over the world and having all kinds of new agey consciousness-raising adventures and expounding on the vacuous emptiness of modern-day life. But now watching this film as an older man (ahem, NOT in my 20s), I realize I identify a whole lot more with Wallace Shawn's character, who has a somewhat insular life, but doesn't think you have to go to a commune on a mountaintop on Tibet to feel a sense of heightened aliveness. Sometimes being truly alive is being comfortable with the routine of your life. Andre actually struck me as a pretentious dilettante.

A detail that stuck out to me for the first time last night was when Andre goes on a long tangent about how the doorman at his apartment building calls him Mr. Gregory, while he calls the doorman Jimmy, and how this is an artificial class distinction and that he has arrogantly made himself superior to his doorman. Almost as soon as he gives this speech, the waiter walks over, asks if everything's OK, and Andre is a bit curt to him. "Yeah" he snaps, annoyed at being interrupted. After his long monologue about how wrong he is to treat the doorman this way, he is automatically dismissive of the waiter, displaying the same heir of superiority he just criticized about himself.

Anybody else ever see this film?

Sometimes it’s hard to get into a movie because the beginning is boring. Other times they rope you in with an exciting opening scene.

When I think of memorable opening scenes one that sticks out is The Dark Knight. Although I’ve seen the movie many times it still is so great.
